In 2009, the IASS initiated its work on integrated, trans-disciplinary and international research in the fields of climate change, components of the earth system and sustainability. The institute aims at exploring new paths, encouraging lateral thinking and stimulating scientific excellence. As a linchpin, the IASS will bundle existing knowledge, critically reflect it, generate new knowledge and develop new strategically relevant fields of research.
The goal of the inter- and trans-disciplinary research is to further the understanding of climate change and the earth system. Sustainability is key to all research projects. The way towards this goal is to create a renowned, permanent basis for the encounter of visiting scientists who are given the opportunity to carry out excellent research as well as to organize workshops and hearings in their respective fields. The IASS invites distinguished scientists from all over the world. They will convene at the IASS for scientific exchange, will work together on complex topics and discuss their viewpoints. The IASS will rely on the experience, knowledge and innovation potential of designated visiting scientists ranging from highly qualified junior scientists to Nobel prize laureates. Due to the partnership with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) the IASS has been integrated in the research location Potsdam from the very beginning.
