All scientists are nerds? Fundamental research is boring and of no use to anybody, except those conducting it? In order to overcome these and other prejudices, every year Berlin's and Potsdam's scientific institutions organize a "Long Night of Science", giving visitors an opportunity to get a feel for the work of scientists, university teachers and students. From 5 pm to 1 am, lecture halls, archives, libraries, laboratories and operating rooms in the region are open to the public.

More than 60 universities, applied universities, foundations, technology companies and science centers participate in this event, demonstrating that the Berlin-Potsdam region is an internationally renowned site for top-level research. Visitors get informed about current research projects and explore the mysteries of science. The "smartest night of the year" answers almost any question, ranging from new technologies and mathematical models to everyday phenomena as well as historical and social developments. Scientific talks, hands-on experiments, artistic performances and good food make up the perfect mix of this unique event.
