Out of a population of more than 150,000, almost 9,000 Potsdamers work with the city's scientific institutions. More than 25,000 students are enrolled at Potsdam University, the University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule), the Film and Television Academy "Konrad Wolf", the newly founded Babelsberg Film School, the Baltic College, Business School Potsdam (BSP) the new School of Sport and Management and the Hoffbauer Berufsakademie. In addition, more than 40 other research institutions are located in this region.

This extraordinary concentration of scientific institutions provides the fertile ground for proWissen Potsdam, founded in 2004. Our mandate is to promote science and research and to enhance cooperation between universities, research institutes, the business community, political and cultural institutions, and the city and citizens of Potsdam and its surroundings.

One of our main objectives is to improve communication between scientific institutions and schools. We act as a bridge connecting different forms of education, including professional training, continuing education, and life-long learning. As a result of our projects and activities, the participating institutions become more widely known. At the same time, we raise public awareness of Potsdam's importance as a city of knowledge.

Through joint activities with other institutions we strive to make science a part of daily life. We help organize festivals, school projects and other public events. One of our recent projects has been a public discussion on the meaning of tolerance to Potsdamers, supported by the Stifterverband für die deutsche Wissenschaft. Other projects include the hiring of a "municipal film maker" and presenting science at festivals as well as public lectures, known as "Potsdamer Köpfe".

ProWissen Potsdam has established a diverse and dynamic program of activities that includes one-time events, long-term projects and regular events, all related to the world of science.
